SRAI - Screenwriter`s Rights Association of India

Screenwriter`s Rights Association of India (SRAI) is the Copyright Society Of Indian Audio Visual Authors of a Cinematograph work, as defined under Section 33 of the Copyright Act of 1957. This Copyright Society was formed to protect and promote the rights of audio-visual authors in India.

The need for a Copyright Society in India arose after the amendment to the Copyright Act in June 2012. The new amendment in the Act made assignment of royalties inalienable, except under two conditions. An author could assign his/her royalties only to a Copyright Society and to his/her legal heirs. India is one of the largest producers and consumers of Audio-Visual content in the world. It is the largest producer of Feature films and TV Soap operas in the world. With the advent of international OTT Platforms in India, Indians are also now consuming international content and Indian content is also being consumed abroad. It thus became imperative for Indian authors to form their own Copyright Society for collecting due royalties for themselves and of fellow international authors. The audio-visual sector is a significant contributor to the Indian national economy where such huge amounts of works are created and consumed.

SRAI will help to protect these economic and cultural contributions by working towards its three key objectives.
